Gather Words
The “gather words” pull down menu provides an interface to generate new lexical content using several different strategies:
- Browse and edit - The browse and edit task allows you to enter words, meanings, and example sentences and to carry on conversations in the context of each of these elements
- From texts - The from texts task enables you to take a text and use it to automatically generate words that go into the lexicon from that text
- From semantic domains The from semantic domains task guides you through a list of semantic domains with questions helping you to think of words in various categories
- From word lists - the from word lists task enables you to take a word list and use it to automatically generate words that go into the lexicon from the word list.
The browse and edit task allows you to create or modify lexical elements (Words, Grammatical Category, Meanings, example sentences, etc). This is done from the edit tab (see Browse and edit one word one meaning below). Conceptually there are three levels of fields:
- Words - A word can have multiple meanings (senses)
- Meanings - A meaning can have multiple example sentences.
- Example sentences - An example sentence can have a translation (free translation)
Each of the fields can be represented in multiple languages.
Components of the edit window include the following:
- Browse panel - the browse panel will be used to browse to particular words and will be composed of:
- a search field - a place where people can enter a word they are looking for in any language
- a word summary subpanel - This includes (in order on the page):
- a header that denotes the content of the columns,
- one page of the word summary table with two columns:
- word in the “first language” and
- meaning - the first meaning of the word in the “first language”
- navigation sub panel that has two parts:
- navigation page location. - denotes which page in the number of word summary table pages you are currently seeing
- followed by first, previous and next and last navigation buttons to go between word summary table pages
- Edit panel (edit tab)
- Word level section
- “Word level buttons” - At the top of the window the user is allowed to create a new word by pushing the “New Word” button. There is also a “save” button which must be pushed in order to save any work done in the edit tab.
- To the right of the buttons will be a delete word link which will delete the word when pressed
- “Word summary” - The word summary provides a summary of the word and its senses. This includes the word and the meanings. Each meaning will be numbered and have the grammatical category associated with it. The summary can also be condensed or expanded by pressing the expand/contract button the the right of the summary.
- Field editing section - Under the summary (separated by a line) will be the word, its meanings and examples. This section will have the following characteristics:
- Each multilingual field (all fields except the part of speech) will have the language identifier in blue followed by the field.
- The first field at each of the three levels (word, meaning, or example) will have a expand/contract button in the top right of the field. Pressing this button will hide or reveal the lower levels. When the level is hidden, only the label (e.g. Meaning 1) and the first field in the first language of the level will show with the expand button and an ellipsis under the field showing that it has been contracted.
- Each field will have an icon that denotes the comment. The icon will either show there is one or more comments or that there are no comments. Pushing the comment button for a comment will take the user to the comment tab in the edit panel and to the correct field. (see comment tab description below) with the following filter:
- filter for the word
- all creation dates, all statuses created by everyone in the currently “showing” languages.
- Each level will have a shadow bar and be slightly indented (width of the shadow bar) to denote the level of the fields.
- Under the meanings and example sentence levels there will be a link to an “add another” command (i.e. Add another example or add another meaning).
- The domain field is a special case (see selecting domains below)
- Domains that apply to a meaning will be listed separated by colons
- When the user wants to edit domains they will click on the elipsis to the right of the semantic domain
- This will invoke a semantic domain selection dialog which will have the following elements(see below)
- Search bar (search for semantic domain text/numbers)
- Semantic domain list panel - will list the semantic domains “found” in the search or the full list if there is no seach Under way
- Selection panel - the list of current domains that have been selected for the meaning
- OK button - changes will be saved by adding semantic domains to the meaning
- Cancel button - no changes will be made

Edit Panel (comment tab)
The gather words from texts task allows you to specify a file or cut and paste a text into the window. The application then adds each word in the text to the list of words already in the lexical web app. (see gather words from texts diagram below) the user can:
- push the “Select file” button to navigate to a file that has the words they want in the dictionary. Once selected, the user
- clicks the open button to select the file
- clicks the add file button to append the words in the file to the existing words in the lexicon.
Gather Words From Texts
The gather words from semantic domains tasks prompts the user generate ideas for words by giving a word category and then asking question about topics within the category. The user can then enter words that fall into that category.
There are two different panes on the page. One that exposes the semantic domains and one that shows recently added words (see Add Semantic Domains below):
- Semantic domain pane
- Top instruction - explains the user is to “try to think of words in your own language”
- Semantic domain search box - when a word is entered a filtered list of semantic domains will result and the user can select the semantic domain they are interested in.
- Note initiating a new search when there is text in both the word and at least one meaning field will be equivalent to pushing the add word button
- Semantic domain pull-down - the user can select a semantic domain by pulling down the semantic domain they are interested in
- Note selecting the pull down when there is text in the word and at least one meaning field will be equivalent to pushing the add word button
- Once a semantic domain is selected it will be shown in the semantic domain pull-down and:
- A question (if the semantic domain has one) will appear below the semantic domain pull down
- Pushing on the back and forward buttons (orange) will take the user to the different questions that are associated with the semantic domain. If there are no questions “back” the button will be greyed out. If there are no questions “forward” then the button will be greyed out.
- Note - pushing the forward or back button when there is a word and meaning entered will be equivalent to pushing the “add word” button
- The word entry field will allow the user to enter a word in the top language (set in settings file). The box will start with a blue box that denotes the field language
- The meaning entry field will allow the user to enter the meaning of the word. and will again start with the blue box that denotes the field language.
- A second meaning field will also allow the user to enter the meaning in the second language
- Pushing the “add word” button will:
- If there is nothing entered - do nothing
- If there is a word entered - save what is in the word and meaning fields
- If there is no word entered it will warn the user that nothing was saved, they must enter a word.
Gather words from Semantic Domains
The gather words from word list task allows you to discover words by looking at words in a wordlist and finding equivalent words in the vernacular language. The application then adds each word to the list of words already in the lexical web app. (see gather words from texts diagram below) the user can:
