Lab Communications

GitHub is the primary location for all lab communications. There are two sides, an internal, this site, and external. This repository, hydro-lab.github.io, runs the external website and the internal communications including the wiki. In a private repository, there is a lab group discussion board. Put all wiki pages in this repository according to the following organization:

  • 1 all research related items
      • 1.0.1 safety
    • 1.1 project-specifics (this information should be kept up-to-date and will be used to populate the external site)
    • 1.2 computer information (not data, computer programs, how to get started, etc.)
      • 1.2.1 R
      • 1.2.2 QGIS
      • 1.2.3 Google EarthEngine
    • 1.3 data sources, how to analyze
      • 1.3.1 ARM (Department of Energy)
      • 1.3.2 GRACE/GRACE-FO (NASA)
      • 1.3.3 GPM (NASA/JAXA)
      • 1.3.4 DEM (NASA/NOAA/USGS)
      • 1.3.5 Sentinal (ESA)
      • 1.3.6 LandSat (USGS)
      • 1.3.7 Planet Labs
      • 1.3.9 GIS Data
    • 1.4 Lab Information
      • 1.4.5 Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy
    • 1.4 field site information
    • 1.5 manuscript preparation
  • 2 teaching information
  • 3 service information
    • 3.1 organizations

Website

The lab website is managed through this repository. The pages are written in Markdown (.md) and uploaded to this repository; some pages may be written in hypertext markup language (.html), but please be careful with this format. Be sure to update _data/pages.yml to keep the navigation up-to-date.

Lab Blog

You are encouraged to make blog posts in the _posts folder. The blog post must be named carefully: YYYY-MM-DD-short_name.md. Each post must contain the following at the very top of the file:

---
title:
layout: post
author:
---

Where you replace the and ; leave the "layout: post" intact.

Style

In all media, proper scientific style should be used. Although, there are great variations in style. The following conventions should be used throughout, but especially external communications:

  • serial (or Oxford) commas should always be used,
  • in-text citations should be used with the AGU-style citations, that is, name and year, as opposed to a superscript number
  • for titles, Title Case should be used, all words should be capitalized with the exception of those with three or fewer letters, unless they are at the beginning of the title (use AGU/APA style guide for uncertainty, not AP, specifically, "from" should not be capitalized;
  • "'s" should be used for all singular possessive, regardless of the last letter;

Lab Safety

Everyone working in a lab or in the field should take the lab safety training online via Blackboard every year.

Thesis Information

Thesis research is a key component of scientific and engineering training. Below are some important forms and resources. The thesis starts with a proposal, which should be an element of the graduate writing class taken in the first semester (this is not the only component of this course). I ask that the proposal be in the spirit of an NSF proposal including a CV (but not necessarily budget or other management documents). While your proposal must be a maximum of 15 pages, it will likely be shorter. By the start of your second semester, it is best if you have formed your graduate committee.

For your defense and thesis document, please see the following resources:
