15th October Friday
Today, with the addition of an informal workshop and cohort retro we had less time for focused work on IOBook. The day started with John's workshop, where he demonstrated how async/promises work in JavaScript. We were shortly able to kick off our standup with emotional check-ins and discuss any minor blockers from Thursday. Since the whole team was present, we were able to merge with each team explaining their code in the review stage, we discussed ways to resolve conflicts and tidy our codebase.
One change we are hoping to implement is the addition of a name field in registration. Team User had initially decided against it to instead allow the user to change it in settings from their profile when adding other details such as IDE, language, country, etc. However, in the review, we collectively decided to include the name so it can be displayed with posts and as a greeting message in the navigation bar. Another minor change was in our routes to redirect from home to posts.
We set out the plan for the day with Team Post working on adding the very last feature of their ticket, which is to add a line break to posts and any remaining time spent on adding some feature tests. And for Team User to work on adding some CSS in a new styling branch.
Later in the day, we had our cohort retro where we were all able to deliberate and reflect on the past week:
-
What was good?
-
What was bad?
-
What will I do differently?
-
Appreciations?
Most teams reported having a thorough plan and prioritising communication helped improve efficiency. And a shared frustration amongst the cohort was understanding how Rails works and its file structure.
After the retro, we had a brief standup, where we learnt about a minor blocker Team Post had when adding the line break feature which they hope to revisit on Monday.
We agreed, however under no obligation, that anyone was free to work over the weekend on adding more styling in CSS or adding the feature to allow users to sign in with Github. It was also decided in advance that on Monday, Ifrah would lead as the scrum master and Shakira as our writer for the day.
All in all, a great end to the week.
