Under the terms of the GPLv3 license, any program that uses a library released under the GPLv3 license must also be released under the GPLv3 license, or a license compatible with it. Source
The driver we're using for the e-ink displays is released under GPLv3, and there weren't very many other compatible licenses, so we had little choice but to also use the same license.
