The concept of "The Mole" is to host the (board) game on a computer or laptop by allowing players to enter with their smartphones. It's possible to join the game via a token or a QR code.

At the start of the game, players are randomly assigned different clues. There are five categories, each containing three clues. The investigator team must try to verify at least three of the five categories. The "Mole" can hinder the investigator team by verifying evidence himself and making it disappear for the investigator team. The game is about finding clues, sharing it with other players, verifying the categories and reaching the goal of the board game without being caught by Professor Moriarty.

Players take their turn one after the other and have the option to choose among four moves. They can roll the dice, search for a clue, share a clue or verify a clue. After each turn, Professor Moriarty runs one or two fields. So communication is everything to reach the goal together. However, the team of investigators must be careful who they can trust.

During the game, the host view displays the map and other information relevant to the game. There are four maps in total, which are connected to each other via a path. Depending on which field the investigator team is on, the corresponding map is displayed.

On the board game map there are three types of fields "normal field", "occasion field" and "minigame field". In an "occasion field", the player must choose one from two occasions. There are five occasions in total, three of which are positive and two negative. The "minigame field" is always located at a shortcut. In the investigator team a minigame is played (so far pantomime) and if the word is guessed correctly by the whole team, the team is allowed to take the shortcut. In a "normal field" nothing happens.

The other game relevant information is the game history, the display of the already validated evidence and the display of the goal of the game.

During the game there is a possibility to turn on and off background music. This is to support the gaming experience. Since the story of "The Mole" is about solving murder cases in the late 19th and early 20th century, the music was chosen to be mystical and dark. As soon as Professor Moriarty gets dangerously close to the team, the music becomes more dramatic.

Technical

If a player's smartphone disconnects from the game, the player can rejoin the game without loss. Furthermore, it is possible to activate the game's debug mode with a key combination.
