Linux Support Update

JTD edited this page Jan 4, 2026 · 1 revision

As of Version 2.0.0, BrowserCord has officially moved to a Windows-exclusive development model. This means that while older versions remain available, we will no longer be releasing new updates, features, or bug fixes for Linux distributions.

❓ Why we made this change

We want BrowserCord to be as fast and lightweight as possible. To achieve that, we’ve had to make some tough decisions about where we spend our time:

  • Fragmentation & Maintenance: Linux has dozens of different distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc.). Ensuring the app works perfectly across all of them requires significant testing time that we would rather spend building new features.
  • Compile Times: For reasons tied to our current build pipeline, compiling the .deb packages was taking significantly longer than the Windows builds, slowing down our entire release cycle.
  • Package Size: The Linux builds resulted in much larger file sizes compared to the Windows version. To keep BrowserCord "the tiny app that does a lot," we decided to focus on the platform where we can provide the smallest, most efficient installer.

🐧 Can I still use BrowserCord on Linux?

Yes. We aren't deleting our history!

If you are a Linux user, you can still download and use the 1.x.x series releases. These versions include the .deb package and contain all the core features needed to sync your status to Discord.

Note: Version 1.x.x is considered "Legacy." It will not receive new updates (like support for new browsers or websites) and is provided "as-is."

🚀 Looking Forward

By focusing 100% on Windows, we can push updates faster, keep the app under 5MB (unpacked), and ensure a "plug-and-play" experience for the majority of our users.
