Language Translation Problems

Language Spanish - En una noche obscura

An Effective Translation

Unlike the precise translation tables created by hand for the User Interface, the Prompt Translator is not as accurate. While often good enough for the translation of conversational text, it is not as reliable with specialist wording and with poetic or archaic language.

In the example shown, the first verse of La Noche Oscura Del Alma (The Dark Night of the Soul) by St. John of the Cross, the Prompt Translator had difficulty. This caused a degree of randomness to occur and the auto-translate prompt text did not match the text created with the Translate button.

This is the Spanish text:

En una noche oscura,
con ansias, en amores inflamada,
¡oh dichosa ventura!,
salí sin ser notada,
estando ya mi casa sosegada;

And this is an acceptable English translation:

On a dark night,
With longing, and burning love
— oh, happy chance! —
I went forth without being observed,
My house being now at rest;

Leading to the creation of the effective image above, the auto-translator produced the following text, as recorded in the console window and the Image Log:

On a dark night, with an eagerness in imflamed love, O blissful uentura! I went out without being noticed, my house being already calm

A Misleading Translation

As shown above, pressing the Translate button produced the following English translation:

On a dark night, with desire in imflamed love, O blessed uentura! I left without being noticed, I'm already in a quiet house

This led to the result shown in the image above, which is not only quite different but not nearly as good an interpretation of the Spanish text.

I think the key difference is in that last phrase. In the auto-translation, "my house being already calm" is close to the original and implies that the lady is successful in sneaking out to see her lover. With the second text, "I'm already in a quiet house" seems to create confusion as to whether the lady left the house after all.

With less demanding tasks, the two results will be identical and there is little point in taking the extra step to preview the English translation. But if the resulting images are not what you are looking for, a minor edit to the English translation might do the trick. The only reason I would typically use the Translate button is if I wanted to use Wildcards. Since Wildcards are in English, they must be used with English text.
