Protobuf v5 is still supported until 03/2026, but we can already take the latest version into use since it can help with backend testing setup (due to other libraries depending on protobuf).

I think all of the components that use this library (transport service, mqtt library) don't use the protobuf library directly so they should be unaffected. At least I can't think of anything that might break other than some internal testing tools.
