The Batten School of Coastal & Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for William & Mary. William & Mary's Batten School & VIMS are among the nation's largest and most prestigious centers for coastal and marine research and education. We are committed to developing undergraduate and graduate students who have the academic and professional skills necessary to meet the present and future needs of science and society.

The Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Lab (CEEL) is a collection of scientists that study aquatic ecology, community ecology, and spatial ecology in the Biological Sciences Department at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, William & Mary.

VA Sea Grant is a seven-university partnership combining the resources of Virginia’s top institutions and using them to find innovative solutions to marine and coastal challenges faced by the Commonwealth. Together we work to improve coastal ecosystems, coastal communities, and working waterfronts by financially supporting researchers, graduate fellows, extension members, and interns.

The Laboratory for Ocean Sensing (LOS) and the Coastal & Polar Physical Oceanography (C2PO) Lab at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science — William & Mary are led by Dr. Donglai Gong. The C2PO lab focuses on oceanographic research and education and the LOS focuses on operational efforts and technology developments. Some of the lab's research areas include polar ocean dynamics, coastal ocean circulation, submarine canyons, and ocean transport and mixing.

Our lab team, run by Dr. Bill Walton, is dedicated to the VIMS’ Shellfish Aquaculture Program mission to advance and support a thriving sustainable shellfish aquaculture community in Virginia and the United States, through globally relevant shellfish aquaculture science, outreach and education. To contribute to this mission, our team strives to achieve three integrated research goals, while also working to develop highly capable individuals skilled in and knowledgeable about shellfish aquaculture production.
