The connection created in the Excel file (without using an external ODC file) was not setting a property (OLEDBConnection.MaintainConnection) that is required to enable the use of CUBEVALUE and CUBEMEMBER functions.
The icon of the tool is also updated in Power BI Desktop ribbon and installer.
