sphinx-tabs is incompatible with Sphinx 9 (at least in some scenarios) but doesn’t upper-bound sphinx, so the docs build crashes.
the light mode style for sphinx-tabs is nicer I think, but the dark-mode style for sphinx-design is actually functional, and officially supported by the PyData theme (from which ours is derived):
