Replace the stacktrace with a clearer error message stating the server is not running and point the user to documentation to complete the automatic set up.

this change replaces stacktraces with user friendlier logs. in the case of the server not running, it suggests to start the server and points to documentation to automatically start. in the case of an unknown error, it points to the logs to help debug.
I hope you don't mind the change without issue or discussion. the idea was to provide more information for self service without having to dig though man pages.
