| City of Pittsburgh Trees | https://data.wprdc.org/dataset/city-trees | Data for trees cared for and managed by the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works Forestry Division. |
| Median Age at Death | https://data.wprdc.org/dataset/median-age-death | Data for the median age at death calculated for each municipality in Allegheny County. |
| Pittsburgh Police Arrest Data | https://data.wprdc.org/dataset/arrest-data | Data for the arrests made by the City of Pittsburgh police officers. |
Our goal for this assignment was to analyze three different datasets and come up with metrics to determine the best neighboorhood in Pittsburgh.
Raied chose the dataset containing data on all the trees in the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. With this dataset, he was able to analyze the quality of the trees in each neighborhood and the values of the various benefits the trees provide in each neighborhood.
Yves chose the dataset containing data on all the deaths based on “official” death records that have been released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The median age at death is calculated for each municipality in Allegheny County.
Francis chose the dataset containing data on all the arrests made in Pittsburgh. More crimes result in more arrests, so by analyzing this dataset, one can determine the safest neighborhood in Pittsburgh: the neighborhood with the lowest amount of arrests is assumed to be the safest.
Looking at all the data analyze above, I have concluded that Squirrel Hill North is the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh. After Squirrel Hill South, it has the second most number of trees out of all the neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and the vast majority of them are in good or fair condition. What makes Squirrel Hill North the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh because of its trees is the fact that the trees in Squirrel Hill North provide the highest dollar value air quality, porperty value, and stormwater benefits out of the top 10 neighborhoods with the most amount of trees.
According to my metric, Mt. Oliver Neighborhood is the best neighborhood to live in. This neighborhood has had the least amount of arrests from the past couple years out of almost 100 neighborhoods. Being safe and away from crime is important when choosing a place to live which is why I chose this metric.
The metric data was from the official death records released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. And it’s actually broken down by race either white and black. It was congruent with Raied data as squirrel hill south is between botanical gardens Schenley and a major cemetery less urban more green areas are subject to less pollutants and inclusive to high quality of life.
In conclusion the best neighborhood by this metric is Squirrel Hill South. This has the highest median age of death which is an indicator of a healthier standard of living and prosperity. Some other close neighborhoods are North Oakland, Banksville, Point Breeze, and Squirrel Hill North.
Looking across the three metrics, Squirrel Hill North is a neighborhood that consistently appears in the best neighborhoods for that metric which is why we have come to the conlclusion that Squirrel Hill North is the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It has the second most amount of trees in Pittsburgh, and it's trees are statstically the most valuable out of all the trees in the other neighborhoods. Squirrel Hill North also has the fifth highest median age at death (85.0), differing only by a couple of months from the highest median age at death (85.9). Lastly, Squirrel Hill North has one of the lowest amounts of arrests made within it compared with all the other neighborhoods which makes it a relatively safe neighborhood to live in in Pittsburgh. For all these reasons, we believe that Squirrel Hill North is the best neighborhood in Pittsburgh.
