This is stacked on PR #41
In PR #41, I moved from Pylint to to the Ruff linter. In that PR, I only made framework changes, not any code changes to address linter warnings. This PR addresses the warnings, roughly one commit per linter rule.
Besides fixing potential bugs, this has the effect of modernizing the codebase so that it looks more like typical mid-2025 Python.
These changes were prototyped in apologies PR #72.
