Change default host to empty string

Using 'localhost' as the default host was throwing connection refused on Linux running Python 2.7.8.

I'm not familiar with connecting to '' which is an alias for INADDR_ANY. I understand that binding to that address listens on all interfaces, but what does connecting to it do? Could you explain the effects of connecting to INADDR_ANY and how it helps in your situation?
