used 2d convolutions for 2d data. Add an option for ignoring the threshold only if not enough points are found

I had already started adding 2D pooling and convolutions when you came over, so I just left it.
Added the option to ignore the threshold if it doesn't find any points.
Nothing should change about using it, I ran a couple quick tests and it seems to work, but maybe test it in your workflow before merging.
