Once you’ve created a project, you can start adding schemes. Schemes are different groups of metadata information and are used to help differentiate between the different digital objects you will be collecting.

  1. Log in to KORA

Log in to KORA following the steps in the Logging In to KORA tutorial. Once you’ve logged in, you should see your administrator interface.

  2. Choose a project

In the center of your interface should be a listing of all the projects you’ve created or have access to. These will appear with the name and description given to them on this page. To select a project, click on that project’s name. You will be taken to an empty screen.

  3. Click “Add New Scheme”

To the left of your screen, there will be a vertical navigation menu with multiple headings and subheadings. One of these headings is labeled “Scheme.” Under the “Scheme” heading find and click “Add New Scheme.” If you’re having trouble locating this button, look at this picture.

Once you’ve clicked on “Add a New Scheme” you will see a new screen in your dashboard which reads, “Add New Scheme to [your project name].”

  4. Enter the Scheme’s Name

Type out the name of your new scheme. This name should be descriptive without being verbose. Users will have to select between multiple schemes when adding records, so it’s important that you name your scheme in a way that will be easy for them to identify. If, for example, your project was creating digital records for books, magazines, and newspapers, you could entitle this scheme “Books” to let users know that this is the place to enter records about books.

Note: This field has a maximum length of 225 characters and is a required field. KORA will not allow you to create an un-named scheme.

  5. Enter the Scheme’s Description

Use this box to briefly describe the purpose of this scheme. Try to be descriptive without being verbose. The scheme description will appear in the user’s interface so use this field to give them guidance on which scheme to use. A good description, using the example above, could be something like: “Use this scheme to enter information about books found in our museum’s library.”

  6. Decide whether or not to Load Controls

The final field in the “Add New Scheme” page gives you the option to a) pre-load controls (or metadata fields) from other KORA projects or b) leave the scheme empty which allows you to populate each field individually.

If you feel your project is extremely similar to another KORA project, pre-loading the controls can save you time. This might work well if you only see the need to make small changes (you can always edit the controls you pre-load). Use the pull down menu and scroll to find the project whose metadata scheme you wish to copy.

If you feel that your project is unique and cannot make good use of a previously populated scheme, then click “None (Empty Layout).”

  7. Click “Create New Scheme”

Clicking this button saves the scheme information you’ve created. When you click on “Select a Scheme” from the left-hand navigation bar, you should see the scheme’s title and description. This is the same information that will be visible to other administrators and users.
