fixes #35 - see discussion there, particularly my latest comment for some reasoning on why I'm clamping to i16 instead of clamping to i8 or clamping to i32.
In case it isn't clear from that comment, I think clamping to i8 or i32 would be fine too - the main thing is to avoid crashing :)
