I think it's related to a boot attack vector, that someone could trick the system to boot from something unexpected (relevant esp. for forensics investigations). I'm not sure whether that's still true nowadays, we'd have to very this. |
Don't need to do this at boot time, and this eases the patching too.

I've submitted most of the upstream-able delta to https://salsa.debian.org/live-team/live-boot/-/commits/master
The rest should hopefully be extractable into new files, so we can stop patching stuff.
If this succeeds, it should become possible to stop conflicting with live-boot, and unmerge the source trees.
