I was getting the following error message:

doc <- pmcOAI(id)
Space required after the Public Identifier
SystemLiteral " or ' expected
SYSTEM or PUBLIC, the URI is missing
Error: 1: Space required after the Public Identifier
2: SystemLiteral " or ' expected
3: SYSTEM or PUBLIC, the URI is missing

After changing the http protocol to https, it seems to work fine.

split downloading and parsing xml apart

This allows pre-downloading of xml files and
then simply calling `pmcOAI::processXML`
with the contents of XML files.
