User Guide

This guide covers all the features of Tab Cluster and how to use them effectively.

Opening Tab Cluster

You have two ways to open Tab Cluster:

  1. Keyboard shortcut: Press Option+M (Mac) or Alt+M (Windows/Linux)
  2. Extension icon: Click the Tab Cluster icon in your Chrome toolbar, then click "Open Tab Cluster"

The keyboard shortcut is the fastest way. It will:

  • Open Tab Cluster in your current window
  • Pin the tab so it stays accessible
  • Focus the search box so you can start typing immediately

Searching for Tabs

The search box at the top lets you find any tab instantly.

How to search:

  1. Just start typing - the search box is focused automatically
  2. Results filter in real-time as you type
  3. The first matching tab is highlighted with a dashed border
  4. Press Enter to switch to that tab immediately

Tips:

  • Search matches both tab titles and URLs
  • Press Escape to clear the search
  • When you reopen Tab Cluster, any existing search text is selected so you can type to replace it

Managing Windows

Each browser window appears as a card in Tab Cluster. The current window (where Tab Cluster is open) is marked with "(current)".

Switching Windows

Click on a window card's header to switch to that window.

Closing Windows

Hover over a window card and click the X button in the header to close that entire window.

Merging Windows

Want to combine tabs from multiple windows into one?

  1. Click the merge icon (fork symbol) in the toolbar
  2. Check the boxes next to the windows you want to merge
  3. Click "Merge Selected"

The tabs will be combined into whichever selected window is the current one. If you don't select the current window, they'll merge into the first selected window.

Managing Tabs

Reordering Tabs

Drag any tab up or down within its window card to change its position.

Moving Tabs Between Windows

Drag a tab from one window card and drop it onto another window card.

Moving Tabs via Menu

  1. Click the three dots menu on any tab
  2. Choose "Move to New Window" or "Move to Window" and pick a destination

Closing Tabs

  • Click the X button that appears when you hover over a tab
  • Or use the three-dots menu and select "Close Tab"

Pinning/Unpinning Tabs

  1. Click the three-dots menu on a tab
  2. Select "Pin" or "Unpin" Pinned tabs show a pin icon and stay at the left side of the browser.

Multi-Select Actions

Need to move or close several tabs at once?

  1. Hover over tabs to reveal checkboxes
  2. Check the tabs you want to act on (select 2 or more)
  3. A blue button appears showing how many tabs are selected
  4. Click it to see bulk actions:
    • Move to New Window
    • Move to Window
    • Close All

Sorting Tabs

Keep your tabs organized by sorting them.

Sort a Single Window

  1. Click the sort icon in a window card's header
  2. Choose "By Domain" or "By Title"

Sort All Windows

Click the sort icon in the main toolbar to sort tabs in all windows by domain.

Removing Duplicates

Click the dedupe icon (merge arrows) to instantly close duplicate tabs across all windows. Only the first occurrence of each URL is kept.

You can also dedupe a single window using the icon in that window card's header.

Recently Closed Tabs

The "Recently Closed" card shows tabs you've closed recently. This lets you quickly recover tabs you didn't mean to close.

Restoring a Tab

  • Click on a closed tab to restore it to its original location
  • Three-dots menu offers more options:
    • Restore to Original Location
    • Restore in New Window
    • Restore in Current Window
    • Restore to a specific window

Restoring Multiple Tabs

Use checkboxes to select multiple closed tabs, then use the bulk actions menu.

Restoring All Tabs

Click the restore icon in the Recently Closed header to restore all closed tabs in a new window.

Hiding Tabs

Don't want to see a closed tab in the list? Click the three-dots menu and select "Hide". This removes it from the list (but doesn't affect your browsing history).

Keyboard Navigation

Tab Cluster is designed to be fast with keyboard navigation:

Key Action
Tab Move focus between window cards
Arrow Up/Down Navigate tabs within a focused window
Enter Activate the focused tab or switch to focused window
Escape Clear search
Option+M / Alt+M Open Tab Cluster or focus search

Collapsing Cards

If you have many windows, you can collapse cards to reduce clutter:

  • Click the arrow icon on any card to collapse/expand it
  • Click the collapse/expand icon in the toolbar to collapse or expand all cards at once

Theme

Click the sun/moon icon in the toolbar to toggle between light and dark themes. Your preference is saved automatically.

Tips for Power Users

  1. Use the keyboard shortcut (Option+M) - it's the fastest way to access Tab Cluster
  2. Search and press Enter - quickly jump to any tab without using the mouse
  3. Collapse windows you don't need to focus on what matters
  4. Sort by domain to group related tabs together
  5. Dedupe regularly to keep tab count manageable
