v1.8.0

What's Changed

Description

Introduces an integration of the Smoldot light client into the Python Polkadot SDK. The goal is to enable lightweight, embedded connectivity to Polkadot/Substrate-based networks without requiring a locally running full node or reliance on externally hosted RPC endpoints.

Key Features

  • Adds Smoldot-based light client support as an alternative transport backend
  • Enables node-less operation suitable for local development, testing, and constrained environments
  • Includes out-of-the-box support for Polkadot and Kusama relay chains and their native system parachains (Asset Hub, People, Coretime)
  • Keeps backward compatibility with current usage

Limitations and future work

  • Currently, only immortal extrinsics are supported due to limitations to calculate era birth
  • Lack of caching mechanism to improve performance for sequential runs

Example

substrate = SubstrateInterface(chainspec="polkadot_asset_hub", relay_chainspecs=["polkadot"])
