Actually, turns out the file in config/preferences is the same file as a file called "config" on the steam version, which makes the save work fully. So this works 100% For me, this produced the following files: which I then moved to where is replaced with the 32bit steam id of the steam user who wants to play the game. |

this seems to work. i wasn't sure if this was the right option for this game but it gave me a folder with a save file I was able to move to the steam version.
Not sure what the config/preferences file is about, i couldn't find an equivalent in the steam folder.
