Objective: Transitioning from Manager to AAA Technical Sound Designer Deployment Base: Singapore ๐ธ๐ฌ
Stop showing them you can write a song. Show them you can build an engine.
- Ditch Instagram: Recruiters don't scout on IG. Move your focus to LinkedIn and ArtStation.
- The "Destiny" Challenge: Use your 28 days of leave to strip the audio from a 60-second Destiny clip. Redesign all the sounds from scratch.
- Master Middleware: You MUST learn Wwise or FMOD. These are the tools that connect your sounds to the game.
- Coding Basics: Learn just enough C# to understand how sounds trigger when a player walks or shoots.
You have 10 years of experienceโdon't throw that away. Use your manager title to get a higher-paying "bridge" job first.
- Now: Assistant Manager ($4k - $5.5k)
- The Bridge: Aim for Senior Audio Lead at an Ad Agency or Tech Firm ($6.5k - $9k). They pay for your seniority while you build your game portfolio.
- The Leap: Technical Sound Designer at Ubisoft or Riot ($7.5k - $11k+).
- The Goal: Audio Director at Bungie ($120k USD+).
If you stay, stop being the "guy who does everything." Start being the "Internal Specialist."
- โ DO: Track the value of your songs. If your music helps a big project, use that as proof for a raise.
- โ DO: Ask the company to pay for your Wwise Certifications and software (plugins). If they won't give a raise, make them pay for your education.
- โ DON'T: Do "Shadow Management." If you're doing a Manager's work on an Assistant's pay, say "No" unless a promotion is on the table.
- โ DON'T: Volunteer for non-audio tasks (logistics/admin). Protect your "Creative Energy."
Next appraisal, tell them: "Iโm currently doing the work of an Asst. Manager AND a Senior Audio Producer. Industry rate for this is $7k+. I'd like to discuss a 'Creative Premium' per song I compose for the company."
Treat your current office as your training ground.
- Record Everything: You have access to a unique environment . Spend your downtime recording high-quality sounds. Bungie LOVES unique organic sounds. This is your Secret Sound Library.
- Automate the Boring Stuff: Use AI to finish your admin work in half the time. Use the extra hours at your desk to watch Wwise tutorials.
- Ask for Critique: Find a Senior Sound Designer at Bungie or Riot on LinkedIn. Don't ask for a jobโask for a 5-minute technical critique on your work. This is how you get your foot in the door.
- The Wwise Adventure Game (FREE): This isn't a boring lecture. Itโs a 3D action game where you learn by doing. Youโll install the Wwise software and actually "program" the sounds into the game world.
- Goal: Complete Wwise 101 & 135 (Learning through the game).
