Raytracing, not to be confused with raycasting, is a rendering technique used to generate images by tracing the path of light and simulating the effects of its interaction with virtual objects, such as reflection and refraction. Because it produces a very realistic image, its computational costs are high and therefore are not widely used. Recent developments have however allowed the use of the technology in consumer-grade products, such as with the nVidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics card.
