⚙️ MGS2 Community Bugfix Pack Improvements

  • The mod will now automatically clean up outdated files leftover from previous versions.

Full Changelog: 2.1.2...2.1.3

Installation

  • MGS2-Community-Bugfix-Compilation.asi (included in the base download) provides update notifications, as well as file verification to ensure that the mod hasn't been corrupted or partially damaged by Steam's file integrity verification, and to verify that mods are being loaded in the correct order.
  • It is HIGHLY recommended to use a mod manager, such as Vortex Mod Manager or the MGS Mod Manager to handle installation for ease of updating and managing file load order (which IS important.)

Base Installation Steps:

  1. Download the file marked MGS2-Community-Bugfix-Compilation_Base_v2.1.1.zip from the "Assets" section below.
  2. Extract the contents of the release zip into your game folder.
    • (e.g., steamapps\common\MGS2.)

2x / 4x Upscaled Texture Addons:

  1. After installing the "Base" version (from the steps above)
  2. Download the desired addon pack from the "Assets" section below.
    • The 4x Upscaled Texture Addon is split into 3 seperate parts due to GitHub size limitations.
    • For a mod manager compatible single file zip version of the 4x Addon, visit out NexusMods.com page.
  3. Extract the Addon zip into your game folder, overwriting any files when asked.
  • 2x / 4x Addon packs MUST always be installed/loaded AFTER the base version.

Recommended Mod Load Order (from first loaded to last):

  1. MGSHDFix (REQUIRED)
  2. Knight_Killer's MGS2 Better Audio Mod
  3. MGS2 Community Bugfix Compilation - Base
  4. MGS2 Community Bugfix Compilation - AI Upscaled Texture Addon (if desired)
  5. MGS2 Demastered Texture Pack (if installed)
  6. All other mods

As this pack already replaces nearly all of the game's textures, our upscaled packs do FULLY REPLACE LiqMix's AI Slop texture packs.

The following mods have been integrated into the community bugfix and are no longer needed:

Configuration

  • See MGS2-Community-Bugfix-Compilation.ini in the /plugins folder to adjust settings for the fix.
    • A future update will be adding a configuration tool (similar to MGSHDFix) to toggle the Bugfix Compilation's individual fixes on/off.

What's Changed:

[Brackets denote what version the bug was introduced, ie Sons of Liberty, Substance, HD Collection, Master Collection]

THIS UPDATE ONLY CONTAINS UPSCALER FIXES. BASE IS SAME AS VERSION 2.1.1.

🌇 Upscaler Fixes

  • Blacklisted & removed tons of upscaled shadowmaps, which looked like crap when upscaled (ie black streaks on the floor in w22a / Strut F Warehouse.
  • Blacklisted & removed tons of upscaled pixel art / low resolution text, which the upscaler turned into Cthulhu runes / distorted heavily.
    • I'll be actively looking for a replacement upscaler for said text.
  • This update shaves almost 3GB off the extracted size of the 4x pack. :3

What's Changed:

[Brackets denote what version the bug was introduced, ie Sons of Liberty, Substance, HD Collection, Master Collection]

🎨 New & Improved

  • IroquoisPliskin1972's Solid Snake and Pliskin fixes and overhaul mod has been integrated into the community bugfix!
  • Change notes from the original Solid Snake and Pliskin fixes and overhaul mod:
    • Corrected banding on Pliskin's hairline after Vamp encounter. [2011 HDC]
    • Reworked Pliskin's face texture utilizing the higher quality hair & beard from Snake's face to more closely match the original PS2 artwork. [2011 HDC]
    • Reworked Snake's & Pliskin's low-polygon model face textures to more closely match their high-polygon versions. (The textures were based off an earlier design during development for Snake/Pliskin, resulting in the eyes and facial features being mismatched.) [2001 SoL]
    • Remade Snake's shaved face texture, which was still the original PS2 texture. [2011 HDC]
  • Two new additions/tweaks have been made to the original SSPF mod content:
    • Black marks on the top/back of Snake's ears have been corrected.
    • A new low-polygon face texture has been made for when Snake is shaved.

🔍 New Corrections

  • Fixed banding above Pliskin's bodysuit / at the base of his neck, which was a slightly different skin-tone from the rest of his head/neck. [2001 SoL]
  • Fixed the sides & back of Snake's neck being a slightly different skin-tone from the rest of his neck/head. [2011 HDC]
  • Restored the original PS2 cloud textures for the exterior of the tanker, which were nearest neighbor resized by Bluepoint & had varying amounts of artifacting introduced (meaning the original textures were slightly higher quality.) [2011 HDC]

🌇 Upscaler Fixes

  • Blacklisted & removed all upscaled skybox textures; these textures didn't benefit from upscaling and introduced visible seams along their edges.
  • Fixed the over-brightened streetlights on the Verrazano bridge.

Immutable release. Only release title and notes can be modified.

What's Changed:

🎨 New & Improved

  • Added full Japanese version support!

  • Added a PlayStation 2 controller icon set, which restores the original colored PS2 icons. (These can be selected under "Button Icons" at the bottom of the MGSHDFix's Config Tool's first tab.)

  • Several bugfix mods have been integrated into the community bugfix:

    • GuyOnAChair's Snake Hair Fix

      • This has been further touched up to maintain the original spikey tips of Snake's hair.
    • Afevis's Sons of Liberty Restoration - Decensorship and Music Restoration

      • This has also been touched up from the original release with various quality improvements to the textures, getting them closer to their original appearance (as some model UV's have changed with 2002/2003 Substance.)
      • Roughly 8 more cutscenes & stages that weren't fully decensored in the original mod release have been added.
      • The Japanese version of the game is now also (partially) decensored. Decensored particle effects are not yet implemented.

🔍 New Corrections

  • Corrected several Shell 2 struts having the "Shell 1" label on them when viewed from the C-D Connecting Bridge. (Contributed by SpaceCore/Jacky720)
  • Corrected the color of MGS1 Snake's gloves when in first person view.
  • Corrected shimmering issue with some cubemaps/reflections.
  • Corrected the EU PS1 MGS1 Special Missions CD being shown instead of the US MGS1 VR Missions disc. (This texture was also still its original PS2 resolution.)
  • Several Japanese location cards have had their centering corrected to their original PS2 positioning. (Verrazano Bridge, Offshore Decontamination Facility Big Shell, ect.)
  • Remade several Japanese title cards, which were stretched from 4:3 -> 16:9.
  • Remade the Basic Actions' UI textures, which were... very roughly nearest-neighbor resized from their PS2 resolutions by Bluepoint in the HDC.
  • Remade the casting theater images, which were also basic nearest-neighbor resized by Bluepoint.
  • Remade the low resolution security monitor screen shown during the first Ames cutscene. (128 x 84 -> 2048 x 1024 resolution.)
  • Remade several codec call videos that were still their original PS2 resolution & stretched from 4:3 to 16:9 by Bluepoint. (MG1, MGS1 flashbacks during Arsenal. MG1 footage captured from 1987 EU MSX, MGS1 captured from MC using MGSM2Fix widescreen.)
    - Mei Ling MGS1 VR Missions flashback & several other low resolution / 4:3 -> 16:9 stretched videos are being worked on for the next release.

⚙️ MGS2 Community Bugfix Pack Bugfixes

  • Halved the startup time of the .ASI from 300ms to 140ms.
  • Fixed a white border showing on the title card when starting a new game.
  • Corrected color accuracy of remastered ocean reflection maps (which are visible during Oil fence cutscenes during Twilight Sniping & before Arsenal takeoff.)
  • Upscaled texture pack: Some invisible texture fixes (ie Arsenal's torture table frame) which were included in the first release incorrectly showed up with black artifacting in-game. This has been fully corrected.
  • All upscaled packs have been completely re-upscaled using a new workflow, completely eliminating any hue shifting (which was also present in LiqMix's AI Upscaled packs.) They are now fully color-accurate to the original textures.
