Tested quick generation on Windows: backends are correctly identified, and the generation process works fine.

I’ve verified Vulkan and CPU support. I skipped the pre-built CUDA binaries because my local setup uses an older GPU with CUDA 12.4, while the project currently targets CUDA 13.1 (I compiled the files locally instead).

Suggestions for legacy hardware support:

  • CPU: To support older processors, we could uncomment the lines for ggml-cpu-ivybridge.dll and ggml-cpu-piledriver.dll in ggml/CMakeLists.txt and ggml/src/CMakeLists.txt. I’ve confirmed they compile correctly on MSVC.
  • CUDA: Maxwell-generation cards (4GB VRAM) can run the model if the batch size is set to 1. Similar to llama.cpp, this would require providing builds for both CUDA 12.4 and 13.1.
  • Docs: It might be worth updating the README with these compilation tips for older hardware.

P.S. The vulkan-shaders-gen.exe file is only required during the build process and can be excluded from the final release.

Example of a "Full" Build Configuration (CUDA 12.4.99)

I've decided to share a "full" build configuration that might be useful for others. This setup is tailored for CUDA 12.4.99, targeting common consumer GPU architectures (pro-grade architectures are excluded here but can be added if needed).

Note on OpenMP
I’ve enabled -DGGML_OPENMP=ON primarily for compatibility and standardization across different environments, rather than aiming for maximum performance on a specific local machine. Since OpenMP behavior on Windows (via MSVC) has its own pros and cons, more extensive benchmarking might be required depending on the specific use case.
On Ivy Bridge and Haswell, the legacy OpenMP 2.0 implementation in MSVC often introduces unnecessary overhead during thread synchronization.
On Alder Lake (with its hybrid P-core and E-core architecture), MSVC's OpenMP might incorrectly schedule heavy compute tasks onto the slower efficiency cores. In contrast, the internal GGML threading mechanism in recent versions is better at prioritizing "Performance" cores, ensuring more consistent and higher throughput.

It's worth noting that cynodesmus did mention having to manually copy the MSVC runtime DLLs (msvcp140.dll, vcruntime140.dll, etc.) for portability on clean hosts — but if that's an acceptable workflow for your users right now, that's totally fine to defer to a later improvement. Thanks @lmangani! Submitting formal PRs isn't really my forte, so I’d appreciate it if you could just use the information below to improve the current one.

I’ve carefully weighed the pros and cons of certain flags:

  1. OpenMP: MSVC’s OpenMP 2.0 (/openmp) is outdated and scales poorly on more than 4 cores compared to native GGML code.
  2. BLAS: On Sandy Bridge (AVX1), BLAS can actually be slower than native GGML due to suboptimal code. It really depends on how broad we want the hardware support to be.

Legacy CPU Support:
To ensure better performance on older processors, I recommend enabling specific targets that are currently skipped in MSVC. Without these changes, Ivy Bridge and Piledriver CPUs default to the Sandy Bridge backend.

In ggml/CMakeLists.txt, please update as follows:
