HateMap

The Hate Map is a survivor-centered effort to document the global impact of hate-based crimes and violence. Our goal is to build the evidence-base to underpin a more comprehensive understanding of the global impact of, and harms caused by hate, while supporting survivors and affected communities in sharing their stories on the human impact of hate, and their efforts to counter it.

Hate crimes do not happen in isolation. Part of our goal is to document this, but also to ensure efforts to combat hate and build resilience do not happen in isolation. We are therefore also building a global community of individuals and organizations dedicated to combat hate locally and globally.

The Hate Map is apolitical and non-partisan. Hate both exists, and targets people across the political spectrum. Our definition of hate and hate crimes is designed to be comprehensive and inclusive. Rooted in the spirit of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948 we define hate crimes as motivated by the intent to deny individuals or groups the right to exist peacefully, with dignity, safety and equal rights on the basis of their inalienable identity such as, including, but not limited to, their belonging to a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, gender or sexual identity, or adhering to a political or philosophical belief system.

Our goal is for the Hate Map to be a valuable resource, both for those seeking support in grappling with hate at a personal level, but also prove useful in providing context and data for research on hate-based violence, support a better understanding of the global threat and risk landscape, be useful in providing context and evidence for the prosecution of crimes and inform policy, programs and efforts to build public safety and prevent harm.

The Hate Map was initiated by Bjørn Ihler, a survivor of hate-based terrorism, through The Khalifa Ihler Institute which was founded to build and protect peaceful, inclusive and thriving communities.
