This is a follow-up to the discussion from the Nov 14th meeting, which ended with my action item to write up a more comprehensive proposal that outlines more of the detailed considerations for a more permissive generic registration mechanism.
A PR was proposed as the forum for discussion, but I can migrate it elsewhere if there's an easier place to discuss.
