Mission Statement
Become a non profit? We need board members?
Existing dating apps owned by corporations, particularly the match.com monopoly, have a huge number of negative impacts than derive from a design inspired by greed over human decency. This project proposes a counter-initiative in the form of another application, one instead built by the community and founded on principles of equality, openness, transparency, and utility. This is going to be done by structuring the organization to minimize profit motives, thus removing the profit-driven features ubiquitous amongst apps such as Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble. Secondly, the source code of the application, particularly the algorithm, will be open-source and explainable, such that the average application user can verify that they are not being taken advantage of behind the scenes. In a further attempt to make the dating landscape more transparent, we will allow the user to view statistics on their own profiles, and in aggregate. This is not some superficial issue that just impacts people trying to have fun sex. Online dating plays a huge role in modern mating dynamics, and the active manipulation by corporations can have disastrous effects if left unchecked. In our view, this is a societal issue of a significant magnitude. The ability to form stable, healthy relationships impacts many facets of our society from political discourse to child safety. The declining rates of relationships and the growing number of celibates and people unhappy with their dating prospects are causing significant impacts on our culture. Fundamentally, rigging the dating market for profit is inhumane, and it needs to be stopped.
