I didn't reason if it was needed or not, but it is enough to close #354, as this is updated, mergeable, and reviewable.
Note that the changes in lib/raster3d/mask.c might not be needed anymore if the current code was enough, but I included them for the review anyways. See #354 (comment), #354 (comment), #354 (comment)
