Chicago Violence and Enforcement Data

The Violene and Enforcement team gathered and analyzed four different data sources closely related to the violence and enforcement considerations of Divvy bike in Chicago.

Police sentiment

Provided by Chicago Police here Created by CPD partner, Elucd – Data FAQ here Safety Score* When it comes to the threat of crime, how safe do you feel in your neighborhood? (Level of safety from 0-10) Trust Score* How much do you agree with these statements? (Level from 0-10)

  1. The police in my neighborhood listen to and take into account the concerns of local residents.
  2. The police in my neighborhood treat local residents with respect.

*Trust and Safety scores are NOT a percentage. A score of 65 means that average response to the questions is 6.5 out of 10.

Traffic crash

Data for traffic crashes that occurred within Chicago with 50 variables including information about date of occurrence, cause of crash, location, type of crash, extent of damage, etc. The dataset is continually updated daily on the City of Chicago’s site. All crashes considered reportable have $1500 in damage or bodily injury to any person involved and involves at least one moving vehicle. However, the dataset contains all reported crash events, not just the criteria mentioned. The data is also owned by the Chicago Police Department and can be accessed here.

Crime

Data for Chicago Crimes 2021 dataset was retrieved from the Chicago Data Portal. The dataset includes the location, date and charge for each crime that occurred during 2021 in Chicago. The data is provided by the Chicago Police Department, and each year has an individual dataset.

Gang Boundary

Data for gang boundaries are obtained from the Police Department GIS Data as part of the Chicago Police Department CLEARMap database, provided by the Office of Public Safety Administration (OPSA). The data are updated annually. Availabble in the dataset are the data from 2007 to 2021, except for 2013 and 2020.

Please refer to the gang folder for details.
