Geographic Inspiration

This space will eventually be populated with examples of interesting maps, geometries, or space-based investigations. I'll be adding to this list up until the end of the semester, so keep an eye on it!

This is an edit-able page, so feel free to add works that you're mulling over or that resonate with you. They could prove useful to your fellow classmates.

  • Postcards from Google Earth is a series of postcards of weird interpolation/photostitching artefacts from satellite images that result in some really fascinating landscapes. Clement Valla, the artist, does a lot of interesting map-adjacent spatial work.

From former students

  • Degrees of Separation shows a satellite map of Manhattan and overlays it with satellite images from different cities in Syria destroyed by war. This project aims to explore how we perceive spatial information and maps based on our previous knowledge of a place.(Cristobal Valenzuela)

  • America Dumps is a series of startlingly poignant images of the ten largest landfills, or trash dumps, in America. (Ellen Nickles)

  • Mappa.js - a javascript library for creating maps

  • NYC Motor Vehicles Collisions 2017 - Mapping all of NYC's Motor Vehicles Collisions in 2017

  • Skunk Map - crowdsourced map of all of the skunk sightings on Bennington's campus.
