Also don't increase the span. The extra results returned are almost always useless.
It will try to find suggestions using the "slow" mode and then the new\ "soundslike" mode and then combine the two based on the score.

The optimization skips over more expansive passes if they have no hope of returning more results.
…root. I'm unsure exactly how try_scan_root() interacts with the rest of the suggestion code, so for now it's best to disable that optimization.
