How Can We Make an Accessible Product?

Defining Accessibility

Accessibility removes barriers that people with disabilities face in accessing the digital or physical world. Keep in mind, the disability experience is intersectional and incredibly diverse, even among people with the exact same medical conditions. When making a website accessible, here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Is the website compatible with assistive technology?
    • An important factor here is predictability. In general, assistive technology can interact with standard website components such as buttons, links, images, headings, etc. However, if for example a heading is being used as a paragraph or a div is being used as a link, this can cause a lot of confusion and make the webpage less accessible. Keep your code predicable.
  • Is your website being tested by diverse populations?
    • Keep in mind, even in the category of "blindness", there is a ton of variety in the specific medical conditions, assistive technology preferences, and intersectional identities.
    • Many people do not have just one disability. For example, someone may need a screen reader AND an adaptive keyboard. Make sure not to make assumptions about someone's ability.

Legal Accessibility

For websites, legal accessibility is defined by WCAG 2.1 AA. To get an introduction to WCAG 2.1 AA, read through this slide deck. To be clear, the shared slide deck is not legal advice or council. For the exact WCAG 2.1 legal definition, read through the W3 site here. All webpages must be WCAG 2.1 A and AA compliant to be implemented in a school that receives federal funding. (According to US Section 504)

Although Audemy is made primarily for blind and low vision students, other access needs must be taken into account. This is because:

  1. Blind and low vision students may have additional disabilities
  2. Parents and caretakers of blind and low vision students need to be able to operate the website and those individuals may have additional disabilities
