You were right @prismofeverything. There was a very simple solution to deduplicate the environment variables in the Singularity image definition.

Also, I coincidentally discovered that the sporadic image build failures I was experiencing on Sherlock can be reliably reproduced on Carina 2.0 using the minimal image definition from my Apptainer issue. It turns out the real issue was in uv all along.

Specifically, if I use the base uv image our Singularity images used to use (uv 0.7.12), I get errors like that in the linked issue 100% of the time. However, if I let Apptainer pull the latest uv image tagged debian-slim (uv 0.9.28), the build succeeds every time. By trying base images with different versions of uv, I figured out the issue was fixed at some point between versions 0.7.17 and 0.17.18. Looking at the changelog for 0.17.18, these 2 PRs stands out to me and may very well be the reason why we no longer see this issue: astral-sh/uv#14304, astral-sh/uv#14338. All's well that ends well.
