Pre-release

Release notes - Marble v1.4.3

A pre-production batch of 20 has been built, and shows problems with the 3V3P rail.
Do Not Use This Release For Production
until and unless this problem is diagnosed and resolved.

This release was planned for a production batch of Marble boards in April 2025.
Due to the unavailability and obsolescence of certain parts, the following ICs have been replaced in the design:

  • Replaced U7, and U10 NC7SZ66P5X bus switch with pin compatible 74LVC1G66GW,125 IC.
  • Replaced U18 MYRGC075050R31RA DC-DC converter with AP62150 which required changes to layout.

Other changes:

  • Moved mounting hole B7 by 0.3 mm (12 mils), putting it into its proper FMC standard location
  • Modify a few resistor values relating to JTAG selection

Release notes - Marble v1.4.2

This release corresponds to the production batch of Marble boards (v1.4.2).
It includes minor updates to BOM:
R166 change from 10k to 4.7 kOhm
R72 and R73 change from 1k to 47 kOhm
For 8 capacitors, adjust orderable parts to match footprints (1210 vs. 1206)

Release notes - Marble v1.4.1

This release corresponds to the third production batch of Marble boards (v1.4.1) manufactured by Vector Fabrication Inc. in Milpitas, California. 115 boards were produced in this run in October/November 2023, procured by Berkeley Lab.

The final shipment included following changes not listed in the fabrication README:

  • Serial number on the front and back silkscreen.
  • Thermal paste between U1 (FPGA) and its heat sink.

Release notes - Marble v1.4

This release corresponds to the third pre-production batch of Marble boards (v1.4) manufactured by Vector Fabrication Inc. in Milpitas, California. Five (5) boards were produced in May 2023 for testing, in preparation for a larger production run. The major difference between the previous versions and v1.4 is the new power management chip from Analog Devices LTM4673.

This version included various additions/checks from the fab house:

  • Addition of serial number on the back silkscreen.
  • Heatsinks on U1 (FPGA) and U2 (clock mux).
  • Tested for no-short-circuited power-plane at the test points.

Following rework was done to get the boards to function:

  • Replaced U52 with PCA9509DP
  • Solder R309 with 4.7k
  • DNP R147 and populate R158
  • Swapped R39 and R40 from 2.2k to 4.99k

Release notes - Marble v1.3

This release corresponds to the second production batch of Marble boards (v1.3) manufactured by Vector Fabrication Inc. in Milpitas, California. 38 boards were produced in this run in October 2022, procured by Berkeley Lab (28 units) and Osprey DCS (10 units).

Due to the worldwide IC component shortage, Berkeley Lab worked with Vector Fab during the assembly process to source alternative parts for certain components that were out of stock. The artifacts on this release include the fabrication package as sent to Vector Fab for production, along with the BOM file received from the vendor including the alternative parts finally loaded on the boards (marble-bom_with_non_stock_replacements_(marble-4dc985bd-fab).csv).

Errata / Rework

U52 should be changed from TCA9517BGKR to PCA9509DP (surface-mount rework).

The v1.3 BOM still did not include heat sinks, needed for U1, U2, and U35.

Rework was added addressing the passive component changes shown in commit 8cbcfb3,
making those boards mostly usable.

CAUTION: Do not attach HPC FMC boards!

Release notes - Marble v1.1

This release corresponds to the second production batch of Marble boards (v1.1) manufactured by Vector Fabrication Inc. in Milpitas, California. Seven boards were produced in this run in May 2021, procured by Berkeley Lab.

Due to the worldwide IC component shortage, Berkeley Lab worked with Vector Fab during the assembly process to source alternative parts for certain components that were out of stock. The artifacts on this release include the fabrication package as sent to Vector Fab for production, along with the BOM file received from the vendor including the alternative parts finally loaded on the boards (marble-bom_with_non_stock_replacements.csv).

This is the first fabricated version of Marble.

Build mod applied during fabrication:

  • Use 2.2 nF for C114 (was 100 nF)
  • Use 100 nF for R95 (was DNF)

List of reworks that must be done before the start-up:

  • U35 - XRP7724 and U23 - FT4232H-56Q are rotated #5
(fabrication error, not a design problem)
  • Remove R142 #6
  • Remove R138 #6
  • Replace all BSS139 with BSS138 #7
  • JTAG (SWD) connected to wrong microcontroller's pins #10
  • Capacitors (CC0201_100NF_6.3V_10%_X5R) around the ADN4600 must be soldered in #9
  • FPGA JTAG connector - no Vref #8
  • Resistors R68 and R69 must be swapped with each other #17

List of less relevant reworks that do not have to be made before starting the board:

  • FMC2 LED should be rotated #14
  • PoE bridges issue #18
  • Replace Q26 and Q27 with NMOS (PN NX3008NBKV.115) to make power indicator LEDs working properly during the power off
