🎉 Migrate is back from the dead. A new version v6 is approved by Google.

#️⃣ There is a significant change in the vision of the project. Here's what has been happening behind the scenes.

  • Migrate v6 is a brand new app, completely rewritten from the ground up, keeping in mind proper android architectural patterns. Hopefully this is the last rewrite.
  • Uses material you design philosophy.
  • A lot of features are missing as of now. Some of them will be added back, some are removed forever.
  • The project will focus on non-root users. Yes! ✅ Migrate can now be used for tasks like contacs, sms and call log backups even on devices without root.
  • License change - no more copyleft license, Migrate GitHub now uses a copyright license. However the source code is still public, anyone is free to provide fixes and patches. There are restrictions regarding distributions though, please read the license.
  • Migrate is part of BaltiApps, expect to see some branding. This is my own Google Play publisher name under which I have been publishing since 2018. Migrate had always been under BaltiApps, however it was not that prominent.
  • Telemetry like crash reporting will be added in the future (will be opt-out). Ads will also be added, nothing obnoxious though, no fullscreen ads just some banner ads like Migrate already had.

🟢 Current state of v6

  • Migrate can only be used from Android 11 and up. A future update may drop the minimum requirements to Android 8 Oreo.
  • Backup and restore of contacts, SMS, call logs
  • Fixed duplicate backup and restore of contacts
  • synced contacts are hidden from backup by default

⏳ Features missing in Migrate v6 which will be added back in the future

  • App backup - including backup of APKs, app data and permissions.
  • System settings.

⛔ Features removed

  • support for TWRP flashing - TWRP in modern era is a pain in itself. It tends to get overwritten with every ROM update.
  • Migrate Flasher and Migrate Helper will be discontinued. Both backup and restore will be done from the main Migrate app.
  • Zipping backups to a single file - in prior versions of Migrate, more than half of the problems during restore was due to incorrect zipping of the backup. All backup files are now placed in a directory without zipping them.

🔧 Some technical changes

  • Migrate was not allowed MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission. Migrate solely relies on Storage Access Framework and MediaStore. You will be shown a warning to select a custom location on the device to store backups into. If not, by default, Migrate backups will be stored under [Internal storage]/Download/Migrate

  • Calendar events backup
  • Publish on F-droid
  • Scheduled backups
  • Maybe support for password protection
