Version Control

Word documents can be versioned. If a new version of a Word document with the same name is uploaded to Sharepoint, a new version is created. This can also be done locally, no idea how, didn't need it yet.

Reviewing changes in versioned Word documents

  • Open the document in your local Word app
  • in the title bar, click the document name. A window will appear with the "Browse Version History" option.
  • This opens the version history in a side panel, click "open version" of the version you would like to compare.
  • This opens the old version of the document, at the top there will be a banner containing a "Compare" button.
  • once you click it, Word will open a diffed document in yet another window, they were the creator of windows after all.., this can take a while so be patient.
  • I've been told (by the almighty Google) that Windows versions of Word can get here directly by using Review > Compare > Specific Version ..., this option is not available in my version (MacOS) of Word.
