Description

Creates a sub-menu in the View menu called Custom Mattes menu. The matte characteristics are specified in a plain UTF8/ASCII text file by aspect ratio, visible fraction of the image, as well as the center point of the matte in normalized coordinates. This package is primarily intended as an example. This package is documented in in the RV reference manual in its own chapter.

The matte description file location can be set in the environment variable RV_CUSTOM_MATTE_DEFINITIONS or chosen from the file open dialog launched by selecting "Choose Definition File..." from View -> Custom Mattes in the menubar.

The Matte File

The file is a very simple comma separated value (CSV) file. Each line starts with the name of the custom matte (shown in the menu) followed by four floating point values and then a text field desciption which will be displayed when that matte is activated. Each line will should contain the following:

  Short name used for user feedback and UI

  Aspect ratio of the unmatted visible area

  Fraction of image visible by height (if top and bottom are 5% matted then this would be 0.9)

  Center point of matte in normalized X (0 is centered see "Normalized Coordinates" below)

  Center point of matte in normalized Y (0 is centered see "Normalized Coordinates" below)

  Long form descriptive text 

There is an example file in the package which will be installed at "SupportFiles/custom_mattes/mattes". The file is included here as well.

The first four custom matte definitions are intended to be used on 2K full aperture (or files with the same aspect ratio of 2048/1556). Applying these mattes to any other aspect ratio will produce inaccurate results.

Normalized Coordinates

The center point of the matte is defined using normalized values. RV is resolution agnostic. We call the image coordinate system Normalized Coordinates. The center of the image is at 0, 0. The float values that make up the horizontal and vertical positions are measured in units of the height of the image. So are the width and height size values of RVOverlay rectangles.

The left hand side is at:

  -1 * ( source width / source height ) / 2 

Note that the divide by 2 above is for each half of the coordinate system.

The right hand side would be:

  ( source width / source height ) / 2 

The top is at:

  1 / 2

   or

  0.5 

Since everything is measured in units of the height and 0 is the center. The top of the image is one half of the height (0.5).

Which puts the bottom at:

  -1 / 2

   or

  -0.5

This file could be published per project and referenced with an environment variable, then you could enable this mode by default.
