there are still some studios using Maya2022 in python3 mode.
(even though we do not support it)

that's right.
because maya 2022 py3 is not supported by addon, so I think it should be bypassed also in the above code.

And the function of the above code is just for starting unsupported maya version without ayon maya addon to avoid errors related python 3.
