Train Closure

Context: Me, on the way to work

Use: Knowing that the tube station was closed due to a supposed fire at Camden Town station, enabling me to better judge when to leave to catch the bus, for example.

Context: Taxi Driver, looking for customers

Use: Hear about a train-line closure due to a fire at Camden Town; good place to get some custom! (everyone's trying to get to work)

Lunch near Leicester Square

Context: Me, hungry for lunch in a typically busy tourist area

Use: Knowing what places to avoid due to a big event or tourist activity.
Use: Knowing if there's anything worth checking out during lunch -- e.g. street performances with good ratings etc.

Context: Hanging out in Regents Park on a Sunday

Use: Knowing what events are happening in the park -- sports, entertainment etc.

Context: I wanted to watch that particular movie
Use: I might decide to go to the Lexi instead than a cinema in Central London, to enjoy the presentation

Exploding pavement in Kilburn High Road, no victims

Context: I live near Kilburn High Road and I have witnessed two months ago another case of exploding pavement in the neighbourhood
Use: Yip replacing here the disappearing custom of keeping in touch of local news through the neighbours. Noticing a similarity between the two incidents, I might decide to look further into the matter - maybe the council has already taken measures, or maybe we may want to write an email asking for further investigations.

Context: I am a commentator on Brent and Kilburn Times
Use: I am able to reach immediately Kilburn High Road to gather the voices of witnesses. No need to bother my council contacts to keep in touch with the latest news.

Context: I am a paramedic working at a mental health charity and I live nearby
Use: I might reach the scene to assess if anyone is in a state of shock.

Use: I might pop round after school to take pictures of the hole and do a school research on the phenomenon.

Arab Spring

Context: Thousands on the ground at Tahrir Square
Use: Individual protestors on the ground can upload media and information to reports that are collated together for the world and other protestors to see.

Note: Preferable to existing mediums like Twitter because:

• Semantic value is retained, tying together distant reports of the same event
• An event's multi-perspective reports can be conglomerated into a single meaningful overview

Unpublished document

Context: I find in a drawer in my attic a picture of a wrecked boat on an embankment, with only a date: 20/08/89

Use: recognizing that my finding might have documental value, I upload it on Yip with a date and the approximate location. The new "historical" report attracts attention and soon someone else posts a link to an old news report of a boat accident that happened on that date, therefore creating new evidence and spawning a discussion thread that might potentially help to clarify any still obscure question about the event.

Pollution

Context: I live in Park Royal. As I walk on my street to reach the station, I notice a thick irritating smell of burnt rubber
Use: my report, which might seem trivial on its own, gets collated by Yip around an issue created earlier that morning about a chemical leak from a small plant in Acton - shedding light on the fact that the impact of the pollution was less localised than initially thought.

Notting Hill Carnival

Context: I am a casual punter wandering round Notting Hill
Use: Yip may help me locate the best bits of the parade, the best sounds systems and improptu, home-managed food stands and - why not - the cleanest rows of portaloos; not to mention staying away from danger if troubles arise in a particular area. Late at night, I may use Yip to figure out which tube stations have reopened at a given moment or which streets are the best to walk for a swift and safe journey home.

Context: I couldn't make it this year and I feel I have missed out.
Use: the videos, sound clips and pictures posted on Yip, with their time, location and tags, can give me a pretty accurate overview about how the events unfolded during the weekend.

Edit: After being at the Carnival, I am now home watching the Twitter stream with the Carnival hashtag. I am amazed by how 90% of the tweets are of the "vanity" type: "I am here having a good time" or "I wish I was at the Carnival". The other 10% is rehashing news diffused by the Beeb or Timeout, or linking the video clip of the police dancing. There's next to nothing that can be deemed "usable"; and surprisingly little self-produced reporting. This can be partially explained by the intensely alcoholic nature of the event, but the very rare interesting bits are completely drowned into the sheer quantity of "spoken selfie" tweets. I believe it makes a good point overall for the need of a platform like Yip that would put the self-produced content into the foreground and won't prompt the users into self-referential micro-blogging.

Launch of sought-after, scarce gadget

Context: I want it! (the nth IPhone, the new Kinect, the latest game for the WII)
Use: Yip can help me discover that at 7am the queue in the targeted shop is still of a reasonable length. I may try my luck and be still on time at work.

Context: I've just bought mine!
Use: bragging rights apart, I can mark on the map the location of the shop and the time of my purchase, noting also that some stock is still available, so other people can make it.

Important soccer match at Wembley Stadium

Context: I am a fine connoisseur of the noble game of soccer and I am attending a England vs France match at Wembley
Use: big websites like the Beeb or some newspaper have often a "as it happens", continuously updated news page for a particular event deemed of special importance. Here's the occasion, for any soccer fan provided of a sufficient level of literacy and a smartphone, to try their hand at live journalism and to have an audience through Yip.

Context: I am travelling in NW London
Use: if I am not particularly interested in soccer, I might not now that the Wembley area will be overcrowded in the late afternoon, or that the Jubilee line will be unusually busy. Thanks to the map view of Yip, I can be alerted and take alternative routes if necessary.

Conference (general)

Context: As an attendee
Use: Being able to report, using video, audio, summaries and quotes. I can share the report on my blog and also make it accessible to the event organisers and people that couldn't attend. It serves my followers/subscribers in real-time and as a historical archive, both publicly and for me personally.

Context: As a person that isn't attending (reason: cost, geography, etc.)
Use: I can keep tabs on the conference through a multitude of reports from those attending.

Context: As a conference organiser
Use: I can get vast amounts of rich media and feedback, useful in future event organising, marketing material, and in real-time so I can monitor what's happening. Additionally it enables people unable to attend to experience the conference online (as a conference organisers I want popularity and maximum dissemination, so this is great!).

Context: General citizen
Use: Ability to share my own photos and reporting of the event, with the hope of my content being seen by thousands of people.

Additionally consider various niche citizens:

• Amateur photographer / filmographer
• Students of journalism / sociology / politics etc.
• Passionate follower of the event / topic / genre

Context: Distant or lazy users
Use: Ability to feel the pulse of an event in real-time as it unfolds, even without being there. The ability to comment, analyze and interact with event reporters and fellow readers in real-time.

Context: News organisations
Use: Ability to gain valuable on-the-ground insight with minimal overhead. Ability to easily contact reporters in order to get permission to use copyrighted media. Ability to better portray a multi-perspective story.

Use: Ability to gain insight into the impact of the event on a local, national or international level. Ability to relay concerns online, interacting with the various reports as they emerge.

Use: Ability to study the event in greater granularity (temporal, physical, topical). Ability to research the event in that same granularity months or years into the future (when it's been archived).

Use: Ability to find out what this 'sudden mass of people' are doing. What event is this? Is it political? etc. Maybe the tourist wants to report on it (even passively).

Use: Ability to react to live issues or to capitalize upon live information in a multitude of ways -- especially important for the organizer(s) of an event. Ensuring it runs smoothly, doesn't disturb the peace, etc.
