What about Xwayland and the handling of the new format there? Everybody is reluctant to do further development there, so if any solution that is to ported there has to be minimal. There is also the issue with the group count > 4: they can be ignored at parsing, but how to handle group state change in Xwayland? |

The keymap format v1 implemented in Xorg ecosystem (namely, xkbcomp) is to limited. The v2 format has been implemented in xkbcommon in order to solved decade-old bug.
However, there is still no extension mechanism for the format, making it difficult to enable forward compatibility.
One possible direction is e.g. to parse but ignore unknown action and parameters1. But what about other constructs?
Let’s specify how implementations should handle unsupported features.
