From 7b87fc5697399ad507fd44968eddb8de162793a0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: John-Scott Atlakson <24574+jsma@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Sat, 11 Nov 2023 14:55:23 -0800 Subject: [PATCH 1/4] Modernize `docker-compose.yml` * Move database connection parameters to an environment file to avoid duplication * Update to modern command `docker compose` vs `docker-compose` * Remove the version number from the file since this is ignored by docker and causes IDEs to attempt to validate * Removed mount of `node_modules` volume in `web` container since the `web` container does not have `node` installed * Removed `:delegated,rw` since this was the incorrect option (it meant that the container had the authoritative view of the files, leading to long delays in synchronizing with the host which caused issues when trying to detect changes for migrations, etc.), and is no longer necessary in modern docker * Added health checks for containers to avoid warnings/errors * Updated base image to python:3.9-bullseye to at least match the version used in `bakerydemo`'s `docker-compose.yml` * Updated base image to postgres:14.1 to match `bakerydemo`'s `docker-compose.yml` --- .env.example | 5 +++++ .gitignore | 1 + Dockerfile | 6 ++++-- Makefile | 34 ++++++++++++++++---------------- README.md | 48 +++++++++++++++++++++++----------------------- docker-compose.yml | 48 +++++++++++++++++++++++----------------------- setup-db.sh | 6 +++--- setup.sh | 4 ++++ 8 files changed, 82 insertions(+), 70 deletions(-) create mode 100644 .env.example diff --git a/.env.example b/.env.example new file mode 100644 index 0000000..900cd04 --- /dev/null +++ b/.env.example @@ -0,0 +1,5 @@ +DATABASE_HOST=db +DATABASE_PORT=5432 +DATABASE_NAME=app_db +DATABASE_USER=app_user +DATABASE_PASSWORD=changeme \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/.gitignore b/.gitignore index 36a34d1..8b3fab4 100644 --- a/.gitignore +++ b/.gitignore @@ -1,6 +1,7 @@ wagtail bakerydemo libs +.env .idea .vscode .DS_Store diff --git a/Dockerfile b/Dockerfile index ff8202d..08950ad 100644 --- a/Dockerfile +++ b/Dockerfile @@ -1,8 +1,8 @@ # Use an official Python runtime as a parent image -FROM python:3.8-bullseye +FROM python:3.9-bullseye LABEL maintainer="hello@wagtail.org" -# Set environment varibles +# Set environment variables ENV PYTHONUNBUFFERED 1 # Install libenchant and create the requirements folder. @@ -26,3 +26,5 @@ RUN cd /code/wagtail/ \ COPY ./libs/Willow /code/willow/ RUN cd /code/willow/ \ && pip install -e .[testing] + +WORKDIR /code/bakerydemo diff --git a/Makefile b/Makefile index 7fd28f2..9180948 100644 --- a/Makefile +++ b/Makefile @@ -8,46 +8,46 @@ help: ## ⁉️ - Added custom ignore files for each Dockerfile to restrict the build context to the absolute minimum Added a custom requirements file to avoid relying on bakerydemo's requirements which results in duplicate installs. The previous setup was installing bakerydemo requirements, which installed wagtail, django-modelcluster, and Willow, and then a few steps later, reinstalling these packages from the local sources. Now they are only installed once. The CMDs for both `app` and `frontend` are now wrapped with `dumb-init` (node is not designed to run as PID 1) which handles killing the processes. Previously attempting the Ctrl-C the running containers would hang waiting for `npm` to give up the ghost, now it exits immediately. --- .devcontainer/devcontainer.json | 2 +- .devcontainer/docker-compose.yml | 2 +- .env.example | 3 +- Dockerfile | 30 ---------- Dockerfile.frontend | 7 --- Makefile | 22 ++++---- README.md | 43 +++++++-------- ...er-compose.linux.yml => compose.linux.yaml | 0 compose.yaml | 42 ++++++++++++++ docker-compose.yml | 49 ----------------- docker/app.Dockerfile | 55 +++++++++++++++++++ docker/app.Dockerfile.dockerignore | 12 ++++ docker/frontend.Dockerfile | 27 +++++++++ docker/frontend.Dockerfile.dockerignore | 3 + requirements/development.txt | 12 ++++ setup-db.sh | 6 +- 16 files changed, 189 insertions(+), 126 deletions(-) delete mode 100644 Dockerfile delete mode 100644 Dockerfile.frontend rename docker-compose.linux.yml => compose.linux.yaml (100%) create mode 100644 compose.yaml delete mode 100644 docker-compose.yml create mode 100644 docker/app.Dockerfile create mode 100644 docker/app.Dockerfile.dockerignore create mode 100644 docker/frontend.Dockerfile create mode 100644 docker/frontend.Dockerfile.dockerignore create mode 100644 requirements/development.txt diff --git a/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json b/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json index 8c92314..2daf779 100644 --- a/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json +++ b/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json @@ -4,7 +4,7 @@ { "name": "Existing Docker Compose (Extend)", "dockerComposeFile": [ - "../docker-compose.yml", + "../compose.yml", "docker-compose.yml" ], "service": "web", diff --git a/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml b/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml index 40dbef6..42ec5b4 100644 --- a/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml +++ b/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml @@ -1,7 +1,7 @@ services: web: volumes: - - ./.vscode:/code/.vscode:delegated,rw + - ./.vscode:/code/.vscode # Overrides default command so things don't shut down after the process ends. command: /bin/sh -c "while sleep 1000; do :; done" diff --git a/.env.example b/.env.example index 900cd04..c914fa7 100644 --- a/.env.example +++ b/.env.example @@ -2,4 +2,5 @@ DATABASE_HOST=db DATABASE_PORT=5432 DATABASE_NAME=app_db DATABASE_USER=app_user -DATABASE_PASSWORD=changeme \ No newline at end of file +DATABASE_PASSWORD=changeme +DATABASE_URL=postgres://$DATABASE_USER:$DATABASE_PASSWORD@$DATABASE_HOST/$DATABASE_NAME \ No newline at end of file diff --git a/Dockerfile b/Dockerfile deleted file mode 100644 index 08950ad..0000000 --- a/Dockerfile +++ /dev/null @@ -1,30 +0,0 @@ -# Use an official Python runtime as a parent image -FROM python:3.9-bullseye -LABEL maintainer="hello@wagtail.org" - -# Set environment variables -ENV PYTHONUNBUFFERED 1 - -# Install libenchant and create the requirements folder. -RUN apt-get update -y \ - && apt-get install -y libenchant-2-dev postgresql-client \ - && mkdir -p /code/requirements - -# Install the bakerydemo project's dependencies into the image. -COPY ./bakerydemo/requirements/* /code/requirements/ -RUN pip install --upgrade pip \ - && pip install -r /code/requirements/production.txt - -# Install wagtail from the host.
