Writes to fields inside polyfills

FYI the boskworks fork now supports writes inside polyfill objects. I know this was a point of confusion in the past. (FYI @rhamedyvena not sure whether you remember this.)

If this is a feature that Vena wants, I could help backport it from boskworks. The logic is here.
