i couldn't find any other way of contact so i'm trying something like this. please let me know if this is inappropriate or not.

i am asking for how you came to making pywal work on mangowc in more detail than the issue you opened on their page (#404)

so far i've only been able to make my solution a cyclical problem wherein my pywal keybind requires a refresh of my mango config. (and if i were to hack a solution together i'm still not sure it would work)

if you happened to come to a solution please let it be known

Your solution is exactly how I have mine. The mango config needs to be reloaded after each run of whatever pywal command you are using with your keybind (as the config doesn't reload itself on changes):

mmsg -d reload_config

ex.

wal --theme random && mmsg -d reload_config

The pywal template for mango needs to be created according to your wishes and your mango config needs to separate out the colors and source it:

source=~/.cache/wal/mango-colors.conf

i am curious as to how to format the pywal template for mango as the wiki says it uses the 0xRRGGBB format. will mango accept regular hex? e.g.

rootcolor="1F222A" (wiki says it accepts only "0x1F222AFF" and so forth) bordercolor="446B7B" focuscolor="306FA3" maximizescreencolor="4280A4" urgentcolor="78777A" scratchpadcolor="B1A781" globalcolor="968494" overlaycolor="9799A1"

would something like this work, or would tweaks be needed?

also adding the reloadconfig command to my bind made nothing happen, usually pywal would update wallpaper, firefox and ghostty but not mango itself and now nothing is happening.

Your pywal template should look something like this (for example):

rootcolor=0x{background.strip}
bordercolor=0x{color0.strip}
focuscolor=0x{color2.strip}
maximizescreencolor=0x{color5.strip}
urgentcolor=0x{color1.strip}
scratchpadcolor=0x{color6.strip}
globalcolor=0x{color4.strip}
overlaycolor=0x{color5.strip}

Notice the .strip gets rid of the #.
Now you have your mango template outputed to ~/.cache/wal/<whatever-you-called-it>.

In your mango config file you need the statement I posted above (removing those default colours first and replacing it with the source statement).

source=~/.cache/wal/<whatever-you-called-it>

Now, as for your keybind, you might need to report back with what you are actually running there and why the reload_config command may not be working yet. I'm more than happy to help.

But let's try this. After you have the above template fixed and in position, run from the CLI:

wal --theme random && mmsg -d reload_config

See if it's working there at least.

that did answer the question! i was wondering if it (mango) could read hex but formatting in a way to force is not something i could've came up with. btw removing the reloadconfig from the bind got pywal to work in the manner i described. i'll try that now

interesting, in short it isn't working. ignoring the bind for a second i've followed the steps and ran that command but it doesn't seem to work. the only visual i have to see if it works is the color of the border so i could be missing something

Is the template file being outputed correctly in ~.cache/wal?
Is your mango config source statement correct?
If your border colors are changing then it is working correctly. Mango doesn't offer a lot ito colour options as you can see. bordercolor and focuscolor are the main ones noticeable.
If you re-run the CLI command posted several times are the border colours changing accordingly for you?

A keybind statement should look something like this:

2. checking on the mango-colors file in .cache/wal it still reads like: rootcolor=0x{background.strip} i'm assuming it should update with the associated colors

Hmmm. Can I ask where are you storing your pywal templates? Default should be ~/.config/wal/templates.

this is where i must come clean a bit, i am using the pywal16 fork of pywal. the aforementioned bind spawns the command wal -i ~/wall --cols16. it looks for a random image in my wallpaper folder and makes a palette and applies it to so far only firefox permanently

I see. But the actaul pywal command doesn't matter. I didn't know what you were using so I used the random option as an illustrative example. Is your wallpaper changing accordingly at least?
