hi, i made webpage that does exactly the same http://wakemydyno.com :)
There is one thing you should be aware of, if your site pings itself and additionally runs background jobs as a scheduler, you will cross free minutes limit (because you run 2 dynos: web, worker) and you ll have to pay $$. i faced same problem and solved it in quite nice way: i run scheduler as a thread on web dyno.
wakemydyno is opensourced so please check it out, particularly config/unicorn.rb (https://github.com/kubenstein/wakemydyno.com/blob/master/config/unicorn.rb#L11)
also i allow myself to do some micro adv and if you have rails app you can use my dynopoker gem which pings app but from inside the app, no external tools are required :)
