Which spelling to use?

There seems to be 2 way to check spelling in Vale.
Using Vale and with spelling

I am not sure which one to use. I have them both enabled, but this just means 2 spell checkers which is confusing.

My use case:

• Need to be able to ignore code and tables
• Need to be able to set terms that are accepted and ignored

They are one in the same: Vale.Spelling is simply an implementation of spelling that uses a built-in dictionary. If you want to use a custom Hunspell-compatible dictionary (maybe for another language or simply one you've made yourself), then you need to create your own spelling-based rule to replace Vale.Spelling.

There's really no reason to use both, though.

I am new to vale and tried the approach described in the docs and here: adding my own rule:

styles/MyStyle/Spelling.yml

# Uses a de_DE dictionary
extends: spelling
message: "Did you really mean '%s'?"
level: error

  - de_DE

This rule I placed in my own style folder and referenced this style in the vale.ini (created with the Resource Generator):

vale.ini

StylesPath = styles

MinAlertLevel = suggestion

Packages = Microsoft, proselint, write-good, Readability

BasedOnStyles = Vale, Microsoft, proselint, write-good, Readability, MyStyle

The problem is that both Vale spelling.yml and MyStyle spelling.yml are applied. All text is therefore checked against both the built-in en_US and my de_DE dictionary. But I want that the text is only checked against my de_DE dictionary.

Is it correct to fix this by removing 'Vale' from the 'BasedOnStyles' list? Or is there a better way?
I want to keep all other default Vale checks of cause :)

You can disable Vale.Spelling:

StylesPath = styles

MinAlertLevel = suggestion

Packages = Microsoft, proselint, write-good, Readability

Vale.Spelling = NO
