Networked Production and Fragility. Modern production often relies on a complex network of collaborations, be it via supply chains or within large organizations. This complexity raises the possibility of systemic fragility, especially in the short run before the system can rewire and reorganise. Through a series of different but related modelling approaches, this talk explores fragility in the short-run and the medium-run in a variety of contexts, and how it can emerge endogenously through different mechanisms.

The papers mostly use theoretical models to explain how complex systems can become fragile when many parts depend on each other. They do talk about redundancy and multisourcing, which are like having backup suppliers or alternative collaborators. For example, in the supply network paper, each firm can invest in multiple supplier relationships to avoid relying on just one input source. So, the model does allow for the creation of potential substitutes through investment decisions.

But the papers also show that even with substitutes, the system can still be fragile if firms or workers don’t invest enough in making those relationships strong. The idea is that when everyone acts on their own incentives, they might underinvest, leading the whole system to sit near a "precipice." I didn’t see any actual data in these papers. They're theoretical and simulate these networks rather than test them empirically. So your question about seeing this behavior in real-world data is really interesting, and it seems like a natural next step. It would be great to see whether, in volatile times, new actors actually step in to build more connections and make systems more resilient. An empirical study of how real networks respond to shocks would definitely help test and build on the theories in these papers.
