I am getting an error

I presume you are using Activator. Make sure you are using Activator 1.3.5 or newer (latest as of this comment). Then edit the plugins.sbt file and use at least Play 2.3.8 as that's the first version of Play supported by Activator 1.3.x:

addSbtPlugin("com.typesafe.play" % "sbt-plugin" % "2.3.8")

After that you may need to completely remove previously compiled code. Something like

find . -name target | xargs rm -fr

should do the trick. Then restart Activator and re-try loading the project.

If this works you can try moving to Play 2.4.2, and hope things still compile:

You also need to change the sbt version here: https://github.com/typesafehub/ReactiveMapsJava/blob/master/project/build.properties to:

Oh yeah, one more thing. Before doing the above, please delete the file project\play-fork-run.sbt. It's needed by Activator and will get re-generated referring to the proper version of the plugin depending on the version of play you are using.
